About Yerlan

Yerlan Kondybayev is a seasoned engineering practitioner, strategist, and the creator of the Agile EDM (Engineering Decision Making) methodology (discover more on edm.7x7x7.org). With more 25 years of hands-on experience in industrial and infrastructure projects, he has progressed through every level of responsibility—from junior engineer to director of engineering organizations and technical leader on major megaprojects.

His diverse professional background spans the mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure sectors. Yerlan has contributed to the design and execution of dozens of large-scale and mid-size facilities, including mineral processing plants, underground and open-pit mines, pump stations, factories, pipelines, substations, gas turbines, and other critical systems. He has worked both on the contractor and client sides of projects, including international collaborations with Bechtel, ENKA, TCO, KAZ Minerals, ERG, SICIM, NCOC, and others.

Yerlan has held senior roles such as Head of Engineering, Construction Manager, Technical Director, and General Director. He has also served in the public sector as part of the Ministry of Industry of Kazakhstan. Throughout his career, he has taken direct responsibility for project implementation in roles ranging from engineering team leader to EPC coordinator and Special Economic Zone infrastructure manager.

Driven by continuous reflection on real-world decision-making, Yerlan developed Agile EDM—a methodology that blends engineering rigor with the flexibility required to manage uncertainty in complex systems. His knowledge is the culmination of decades of field experience, systematic knowledge development, and deep insights into the art and discipline of engineering decisions. Today, Yerlan is dedicated to advancing a new generation of project thinking—engineering thinking grounded in maturity, systems logic, practical efficiency, and accountability. He leads educational initiatives, consults for industrial companies, and continues to shape best practices for managing complex engineered environments.
